MULTIPHONE - INTERACTIVE REAL-TIME VIDEO CELLPHONE INVENTION AND DESIGN:

Garry Robb, founder of AVT Audio Visual Telecommunications Corporation (AVT), in 1995 conceived the idea of, and developed the concept of, a multi-functional potable cellphone, which he named the Multiphone™, capable of interactive visual and audio communications with another similar device utilizing a rotating video camera on a pivotal axis.

The rotating camera can be aligned to capture images of the user while speaking into the cellphone, or turned through 180 degrees to capture images the user is looking at. The rotating video camera enables the cellphone to be used for video teleconferencing and the viewing of real time moving images, as well as still pictures.

This Multiphone™ invention also contemplates a cellphone microchip with an integrated code for filtration, compression and decompression, and repair algorithms (i.e. mathematical formulae) which the AVT engineers have developed as well (see below).

AVT’s Multiphone™ invention has been protected by patents issued in the USA #6177950, Europe (Germany, France, Finland, Sweden) #96 00804.0, Canada #2,243,244, Japan #9-525550, and China #97191724.8.

To date, over 15 million video cellphones apparently based on AVT’s Multiphone™ invention and design have been manufactured by Toshiba and sold through Docomo in Japan.

VIDEOCRUNCH® - VIDEO FILTER, COMPRESSION & DECOMPRESSION REASSEMBLY, REPAIR & SYNCHRONIZATION MICROCHIP CODE:

AVT has developed and is presently enhancing cellphone microchip codes or codex, named by AVT VideoCrunch®, which is expected to provide commercially competitive real-time video filtration, compression and decompression, reassembly, repair and synchronization over low bit rate wireless networks utilized worldwide for cellphone transmissions. VideoCrunch® codex is expected to minimize the number of computational instructions per second and hence to be competitive with regard to quickness and power consumption with other known codex technologies.

One of the most distinctive features of VideoCrunch® codex is that it functions over existing 2.5G narrowband wireless infrastructure currently utilized by most cellphone service providers. It has also been designed to work seamlessly over the new 3G (third generation) broadband wireless network. This technology is fully compatible with the international MPEG-4 standard for codex.

AVT’s codex is designed to firstly, filter out electronic data representing electronic images (pixels) unchanged from the previous picture frame, secondly, compress the remaining data to be transmitted and then decompress such data upon receipt of the transmission, and thirdly reassemble the transmitted data with the filtered out data remaining from the previous picture, and fourthly repair damaged packets of data, to make a complete new picture on the receiving cellphone screen while continually adjusting the pixels to synchronize the video with the audio, thereby enabling real time synchronized video and audio transmission with relatively low power consumption as a result of the smaller amount of data to be transmitted and processed.

The VideoCrunch® codex simplistically comprises a series of inter related mathematical formulae (algorithms) designed to identify at a point in time only the pixels in an image that have changed from the previous image and filter out all other pixels, then compress and transmit only those changed pixels to the receiving cellphone, and then decompress and reassemble the matrix of pixels, by aligning such changed pixels with the unchanged pixels in an electronic image on the receiver’s phone screen, while continually repairing any damaged packets of data and adjusting the pixels to synchronize the video with the audio. This process in reality happens about 12 to 15 times a second.

Once the demonstration of the VideoCrunch® codex has been successfully completed, AVT plans to aggressively pursue patents for all the VideoCrunch® codex, including both complete DSP and FPGA based codes, in the same international jurisdictions as for the Multiphone™.

SECURITY DEVICES - VCR3000 - ANOTHER APPLICATION OF VIDEOCRUNCH® TECHNOLOGY:

In addition to cellphones, AVT is actively exploring an application of its VideoCrunch® codex technology in security devises. AVT has already essentially optimized its DSP based codex for a video only device called the VCU 3000™ that provides motion activated live video feed transmitted from cameras at remote locations to a personal computer or cellphone in real time.

The VCR 3000™ could be placed in a remote location, such as a boat, RV, construction equipment, vacation home, or airplane cockpit, and its video camera is motion activated so that any intrusion would trigger the unit to start filming and relaying images in real time back to a PC or cellphone alerting the owner of the intrusion and capturing images of the intruder. It is expected that the unit will begin recording within a second after the triggering motion and that the unit will begin transmitting images within 1 - 2 seconds thereafter.

The advantage of AVT’s technology is that the unit will begin sending images using AVT’s codex in a matter of seconds before any intruder could locate the unit and disable it.

The design of the hardware has been completed and the construction blueprint is essentially completed. A prototype of the VCR 3000™ has been built and has received the required FCC approvals. However, some additional work will be required to incorporate the current enhancements to the DSP code into the unit, and eventually the code will have to be converted to FPGA in order to reduce the price.
